Jay-Z is letting fans into his world with two major releases this month. He just published his book, “Decoded,” in which he takes a closer look at his career, and on Monday (November 22), Hova is releasing a greatest-hits album, The Hits Collection, Volume 1.

The album features Jay’s most memorable tunes, including “Big Pimpin’,” “Hard Knock Life,” “99 Problems” and his collabo with his superstar wife, Beyoncé, “03′ Bonnie & Clyde.”

But when MTV News caught up with Bey Sunday at a New York screening for her DVD concert special, “I Am … World Tour,” she admitted that “Bonnie & Clyde” isn’t her favorite Jay-Z track.

“God, that’s not my favorite, even though I like it,” she laughed. “I can’t tell you which one is my favorite. It’s just too many. You’re putting me on the spot!”

While the pair may be releasing fresh products at the same time, the singer insists there is no competition in the Carter-Knowles household.

“No absolutely not, [there is no competition],” she told reporters at the DVD event, going on to praise “Decoded.” “That book is unbelievable, and I think we’re all really proud of it. And this DVD [out this] Thanksgiving — it’s the holiday season of everyone’s [material] coming out.”

The DVD shows a new, more intimate side of the usually private Beyoncé, and Jay-Z admits that his book also sheds new light on his persona and career. “A lot of people listen to music, but they don’t really listen to it,” he explained. “You may know the words and you may bop your head to it, but you don’t really understand what you’re singing.”

Open the floodgates! It’s Mega-Release Week, with Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and Lloyd Banks all dropping new albums. Stick with MTV News for everything you need to know about the brand-new music.

Britney Spears fans are gearing up for the release of the singer’s new music in 2011. With the album due out in March, and a single expected to drop before then, details are slowly emerging about the music and what it was like to work with Spears on the follow-up to 2008′s Circus.

“Right now we are preparing for Britney’s upcoming album, which will be released in March. Some other things too, but the main focus is the album,” Swedish producer Shellback said in a recent radio interview. “It works in many different ways [when you work with Britney]. You can make something absolutely new, or take a beat that’s three years old and come up with a good sound.”

Shellback, who worked with Pink on “Raise Your Glass,” collaborated with Dr. Luke and Max Martin on music for Spears. The producers are donating a guitar they used on the album to charity.

“[Britney]‘s actually damn professional. You read a lot on the Internet that Britney is not singing and mimes, but she is actually damn professional,” Shellback said. “She’s done it since she was 16. And just rhythmic way, she is f—ing awesome! And you do not have to go through and talk about the rhythms and stuff that you sometimes have to do. She’s very easy in the studio.”

Spears has shared her excitement about the new album with fans via her Twitter page. “I’m almost done with my new album and it will be coming out this March,” she wrote. “I AM IN L-O-V-E WITH IT!”

How Katy Perry Avoided A Sophomore Slump

Dec 31 2010 Published by under Uncategorized

Critics weigh in on pop star’s rise thanks to Teenage Dream.

In 2008, Katy Perry proclaimed she was One of the Boys, going around town kissing girls and “Waking Up in Vegas.” Then two years later, Perry released her triumphant sophomore effort, Teenage Dream, a spirited mix of sugary love ballads and feisty anthems.

Many artists have fallen victim to the dreaded sophomore slump, delivering fans and critics a disappointing second album. Instead, Perry stuck to her pop guns and gave everyone what they wanted: fun, quirky pop songs.

While her contemporaries were busy rapping, like Ke$ha, or making grandiose political statements, like Lady Gaga, Perry just wanted to have fun. She wanted her fans to dance around in daisy dukes, and it paid off: She had a string of #1 hits including “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream” and her empowerment anthem “Firework.”

So, when MTV News asked a few critics just what it is that helped solidify Perry’s pop star status in 2010, they had this to say:

Perry looks like a pop star, but isn’t as polished as most of them. Elliot Wilson of RapRadar.com explained, “She has a rock-chick kind of attitude, but at the same time she can pass for a pop princess.

“What I like about Katy Perry is that she seems kind of rebellious. People want to peg what the artist should be, and then you see the artist’s growth, and I think that she’s challenging. I think she’s brash and bold.”

Plus, over the course of the past 12 months, she’s used that persona to sell herself and her music. “She’s very good at the marketing side of things,” Noah Callahan of Complex explained. “She has a very clear aesthetic. It’s very digestible and understandable, and it doesn’t hurt that she’s very easy on the eyes.”

Writer Julianne Esobado-Shepard credits Perry’s kooky persona as one of the reasons why she’s been so embraced by pop lovers.

“She’s got hooks. Again, [her producer] Dr. Luke just kind of murdered it, especially with ‘Teenage Dream,’ ” she said. “She’s sort of a blank slate in a way. She’s like an avatar of what people think they want, which is again like boobs. The fact that she likes shooting things out of her boobs so much has really gone a long way for her career.”

Eminem Ruled 2010 — And Here’s How

Dec 30 2010 Published by under Uncategorized

Rapper rose from ashes of disappointing album to top of the charts and 10 Grammy nominations.
By Gil Kaufman

Eminem

It’s fitting that Eminem is planning to return to the big screen next year in the “8 Mile”-inspired boxing film “Southpaw.” Because like Rocky after he was counted down and out so many times in that famous pugilist movie serial, Marshall Mathers seemed like he’d run out of gas in 2009 only to come storming all the way back, and then some, in 2010 to post one of his biggest and baddest years to date.

At a time when younger artists like Justin Bieber, Kanye West and Lady Gaga are relying on social media, a dizzying blitz of promotional appearances and concerts, and a nonstop hype machine to keep their careers stoked, Eminem’s path back to the top of the musical heap was decidedly old-school: He released a great album in Recovery that emotionally connected with fans thanks to some of the most hook-heavy songs of his career while maintaining an elusive persona that kept them guessing.

“On Recovery, he was really able to tap into the emotive 2002 stuff that people loved in ’8 Mile,’ ” said Complex Editor in Chief Noah Callahan-Bever. “And I think that the fact that he’s not tech-savvy or any of that stuff really doesn’t hurt him because he’s able to cultivate a little bit of a mystery about himself and his comings and goings. That exclusivity creates more value to his limited presence.”

While songs like mega first single “Not Afraid” and the inescapable Rihanna hookup “Love the Way You Lie” were getting wall-to-wall spins at radio, Em made only a few promotional appearances, played just a handful of dates — including the lauded Home and Home shows with Jay-Z — and managed to keep that air of inscrutability about himself while putting up the best sales figures for any album released in 2010. The less you saw of him, the more you wanted to see him.

“I think it kind of benefited because [of] the whole backstory behind the album,” Julianne Escobedo Shepherd, former executive editor of The Fader, said about the drama surrounding Slim Shady’s second comeback attempt after five years in drug-induced exile and 2009′s so-so reception for Relapse. “And his comeback from a bad album … the whole thing with the pills, and I think it kind of lent to his mystery. There’s something to be said for rappers who have a trillion Twitter followers but at the same time you kind of don’t want to be able to say whatever you want to your favorite rapper. I think that he kind of kept his integrity in the way that he needed to as an older rapper.”

Putting out a barrage of cameo verses has been the go-to move for up-and-comers like Drake and Nicki Minaj as a way to establish their brand. But Marshall borrowed that same new-school page and made it feel classic by being very selective about which songs he lent his voice to. And, almost without exception, every choice he made was an instant classic, from his killer verse on Drake’s “Forever” to a solid duet with Lil Wayne on “Drop the World,” some tasty bars on B.o.B’s “Airplanes” and a nod to the new kids on the block on Nicki’s “Roman’s Revenge.”

Most of his peers seem to believe that more is more — more endorsements, more products, more interviews, more guests on their tracks — even as Em came off as the wily veteran who picks his high-percentage shots while the rest of the squad is firing off endless jumpers.

“When Eminem went away, the feeling of like, ‘Well, that whole market’s going away. All those people, they’re just dispersing off into the ether and no one’s gonna be ready for him when he’s ready to come back,’ ” said New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica of the excitement that greeted the rapper’s return to form. “And what I think you realize this year is that all those people are like sleeper cells and all got activated. All of a sudden, ‘Oh, Eminem’s back. It’s OK to buy his CD again. I didn’t have anyone I feel like I wanted to buy for the last two or three years; now I feel like I can commit to Eminem.’ ”

What also became clear this year, Caramanica said, is that unlike flash-in-the-pan pop rappers or mainstream acts whose audiences don’t grow with them as they mature, Eminem’s fans have been loyal, even as he’s picked up a whole new generation of followers thanks to his more accessible new songs. The evidence of that trend can be seen in the fact that, months after its release, Recovery was still routinely hanging around the top 20, if not top 10, on the Billboard albums chart, an indication that new fans were being brought onboard every week.

That slow and steady, measured approach clearly paid off, as Em won two VMAs (off of eight nominations) in September and ended the year by loading up with a leading 10 Grammy nominations and a #2 spot on MTV News’ Man of the Year countdown. You can be sure when the Grammys are handed out in February, Marshall’s name will be mentioned a few times, because if there’s anything the Recording Academy (and, let’s face it, all of America) loves, it’s a comeback.

What did you think of Em’s 2010? Let us know in the comments!

Joe Budden Says Eminem/Slaughterhouse Deal ‘Not Done’

Dec 30 2010 Published by under Uncategorized

‘[It's] too premature for me to speak on,’ Jersey MC says of whether supergroup will sign with Shady, on ‘RapFix Live.’

For fans of the supergroup Slaughterhouse, Joe Budden has one thing he can confirm about the crew’s buzzed-about deal with Eminem: It’s too early to confirm anything.

Whispers that the hip-hop A-Team of Budden, Crooked I, Royce Da 5’9″ and Joell Ortiz will ink a contract with the Shady Records boss have followed the foursome for a while, but while closing a deal with the Detroit hip-hop head looks promising, nothing has been nailed down just yet.

“The deal is not done. If everything goes according to plan, [then] hopefully. [It's] too premature for me to speak on,” Budden said during his “RapFix Live” interview on Thursday (December 16). Even though Budden doesn’t have any new answers for Slaughterhouse acolytes eager for an official stamp of approval from Em, the Mood Muzik MC noted that he’s been fielding the same fan inquiries for a minute.

“I’ve been answering that same question for a … year and change. Maybe ever since the Drake “Forever” video … when Slaughterhouse was standing with Eminem, I’ve been answering Eminem questions,” he said. “Eminem is a whole ‘nother entity, the guy’s nominated for 10 Grammys.”

Em may be a chart-ruling trophy magnet but Budden said the first time he chopped it up with the Recovery lyricist, it was his wit that made an impression on the New Jersey-bred spitter.

“[He said] something real sarcastic. Something sarcastic as far as rapping goes. I think it was about a verse that I was doing. It’s OK. But he’s funny like that,” Budden recalled, before explaining Shady’s disarmingly down-to-earth charm. “It’s almost like you’re not even talking to him, like he’s not who he is. I’m a huge fan, so I’ll be sitting there like, ‘Holy snap, it’s Em,’ then [you're] cracking jokes the next minute. [He's] just a real cool guy.”

Budden also told MTV News last month that despite his outsize fame, Em remains a dedicated guardian of hip-hop culture.

“Em, to be as successful as he is, and I’ll just tell this to anybody with two ears, or one ear, for that matter, is just one of the most supportive hip-hop people that I’ve met,” he said. “He’s really, really just into hip-hop and rap and lyrics. He’s just really into all of the things that group was built around.”

What are you looking forward to from Slaughterhouse and Joe Budden? Let us know in the comments!
