2010 In 60 Seconds: Comebacks By Kanye, Eminem, Betty White And More

MTV News’ pop-culture expert Jim Cantiello takes a look back at the year that was: all in a minute.

Well, 2010 is nearly in the books, and if you’re a fan of octogenarians on the comeback trail, “California Gurls” gone wild and swoop-haired Canadian teenagers, congratulations on the best year of your life!

Yes, it was quite a ride … Kanye West returned to top form, Eminem recaptured his old magic, Taylor Swift moved a million, Rihanna proved to be unstoppable, Katy Perry proved the doubters wrong and Ke$ha, well, she just proved to be Ke$ha. Lady Gaga dared to speak out, Weezy went away, and a host of new stars — everyone from Drake to Justin Bieber to Willow Smith — stepped up to the plate.

In pop culture, we were mesmerized by the exploits of everyone from Amber Portwood to Zac Efron, obsessed with the likes of Antoine Dobson and the “Pants on the Floor” guy, cheered on Betty White and vilified Mel Gibson (and probably Miley, too). We watched as our favorite couples went their separate ways, said goodbye to “Lost,” “The Hills” and Jay Leno (whom we then said hello to all over again), and went absolutely crazy for the iPad. Oh, and everything in the universe was made in 3-D.

And all of that was just the tip of a rather sizeable iceberg. It’s pretty difficult to sum up 2010 in any way, so let’s just say it was the “most” year in recent memory. The most stars, the most scandals, the most use of the word “vuvuzela.” There were more shake-ups, breakups and comebacks than we can even remember … so it’s a good thing we’ve got MTV News’ pop culture expert Jim Cantiello to do it for us. Here’s his look back on the year that was … in 60 seconds, of course.

Ready? Go.

Eminem, Jay-Z Track ‘Syllables’ Leaks Online

Dec 30 2010 Published by under Uncategorized

The dated tune, titled ‘Syllables,’ also features Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Stat Quo and Cashis.

Leave it to the last two Hottest MCs winner, Eminem and Jay-Z, to lament the lost art of lyricism in hip-hop.

The two top-notch rappers — along with Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Stat Quo and Cashis — spit about catchy choruses and gimmicks taking over the game on “Syllables.” The track is a buried studio gem from old recording sessions that made its way online on Tuesday night.

“If we got to dumb down our style and A-B-C it, then so be it,” Em raps over slow piano stabs. “‘Cause nowadays, these kids, geez/ Don’t give a sh– about lyrics, all they want to hear is a beat and that’s it/ Long as they can go to the club and get blitz, pick up some chicks and get some digits.

“We don’t know a word to the verse, we only know the chorus,” he adds later. “‘Cause the chorus repeats the same four words for us.”

It’s unclear when the song was recorded, although Cashis confirmed that the number was dated via a Twitter post.

“I recorded it a while ago but it just came out today,” wrote the rapper. “Timing is everything.” The tune likely dates back to when Cashis was a newcomer on Shady Records (Stat Quo, an upstart Aftermath signee at the time, has since left the label).

Meanwhile, a track called “Topless” featuring Eminem and Nas also hit the Net on Tuesday night. A previous version of the song with Nas and T.I. has been circulating online for some time.

Em and Tip both rap in cadences similar to Dr. Dre, a sign that their vocals are references for the producer.

Jeff Bridges Heaps Praise On ‘True Grit’ Co-Star Hailee Steinfeld

Dec 29 2010 Published by under Uncategorized

Bridges calls the 14-year-old actress’ performance ‘remarkable.’

With the Coen brothers’ “True Grit” making its way into theaters this week, all eyes likely will be turning to newcomer Hailee Steinfeld, who plays the film’s young leading lady, Mattie Ross. In her first major role, the 14-year-old actress ultimately has to carry the first portion of the movie, and her performance has been garnering some serious buzz during this awards season. When MTV News caught up with Steinfeld’s co-star Jeff Bridges while he was promoting “True Grit,” he said he was impressed by the intensity of her performance while they were filming on set.

“What a tough, challenging role for a seasoned actor. All that dialogue, kind of tricky way of speaking. Thirteen-year-old girl, never been in a movie, and she comes up with that performance,” Bridges gushed. “Isn’t that remarkable?”

Steinfeld found herself surrounded by a full cast and crew of cinema veterans. The Coen brothers won an Oscar for directing 2008′s “No Country for Old Men” and have been nominated two other times, Bridges took home a Best Actor Oscar for his role in last year’s “Crazy Heart,” and Matt Damon and Josh Brolin both have received Academy Award nods in acting categories in the past. But Bridges said Steinfeld didn’t need any acting tips from himself or any of the other castmembers.

“I might have slipped out a tip once or twice, and I always regret when I would do that. It’s almost like a reflex action — you can’t help but put yourself into the other actor’s position sometimes,” he explained. “I always appreciate a tip from some guy, one of the other players, but no, I let her run free. The brothers directed her beautifully.”

With all the buzz Steinfeld has been getting for her “True Grit” performance, she now is one of the main actresses being looked at to play another strong female character: Katniss Everdeen in “The Hunger Games.” When Steinfeld spoke with MTV recently while promoting “True Grit,” she said it “would definitely be an honor” to even be considered for the Katniss role.

“I didn’t even realize that people were mentioning my name,” she said. “It’s every actor’s dream to be recognized for something that they love to do, and to get recognized for that is pretty amazing. I thank the people out there who think that.”

Check out everything we’ve got on “True Grit.”

‘I Used To Be Fat’ Star Opens Up About Series Premiere

Gabriella is ready to chronicle her struggles to lose weight and get healthier on MTV’s “I Used to Be Fat.” On the show, Gabriella, along with her trainer, Katie, learns to eat and exercise her way to a healthier weight before she heads off to college. With the show debuting Wednesday night (December 29), Gabriella said she’s really excited for everyone to see how she slimmed down.

“On the show, you’re gonna see just a normal high school senior and just the struggles that a regular high school senior goes through, but my story’s different because I wanted to lose weight,” she told MTV News. “You’re just gonna see someone who struggles with everyday life and, on top of that, losing weight.”

Regarding seeing herself on the first episode, Gabriella said, “It was weird, and it was kind of sad too. I saw it, and I was like, ‘I was really that big?’ I couldn’t really believe it. It made me even more proud of myself because I saw how far I’ve come.”

Gabriella said she had many people in her life cheering her on during the transition, and especially credited her mom for keeping her strong through the process.

“My parents were really supportive, and I think that’s really important ’cause you need to have a good support system, and they were really happy for me,” she recalled. “My friends were really, really supportive because they knew I always struggled with my weight and I always had a problem.”

Looking back, Gabriella had a little advice for her former self: “I would tell her to get off the couch and get up and I could do it. I would tell myself to stay strong or be strong.”

So, what tips does she have for others in her position? “The best piece of advice is: Just take it day by day,” she suggested. “Because it’s a process. It is hard, but if you stay strong and motivated, you can do it.”

Don’t miss the series premiere of “I Used to Be Fat” on Wednesday (December 29) at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.

Cameron Diaz is in a bikini, an idiot

Dec 29 2010 Published by under Uncategorized

The best thing about these pictures of Cameron Diaz and her lover Alex Rodriguez in Hawaii yesterday is that they were taken from really far away and the water looks real pretty, so you’re not overwhelmed by how shockingly ugly Cameron Diaz is.
Oh, and she?s as athletic as she is lovely. [...]

On the East Coast, revenue streams are slowly rising as banks are still cratering and trying to recover from the recession. But out West, money ain’t a thing, as Jermaine Dupri and Jay-Z once rapped.

Forbes has released their list of Hollywood’s 20 Highest Earners of 2010, with Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus among those rubbing elbows with the likes of power players like Oprah Winfrey.

The venerable talk-show host topped the list with a whopping $315 million haul. Winfrey’s earnings were generated for the most part by her multimedia deals, which include a syndication deal for her TV show, a magazine and her soon-to-be-launched network.

“Avatar” creator James Cameron came in second, more than $100 million behind Winfrey, with a tally of $210 million. Director and playwright Tyler Perry ($125 million), blockbuster movie producer Michael Bay ($120 million) and golfer Tiger Woods ($105 million) rounded out the top five.

Beyoncé was the only pop star to break the top 10. The “Single Ladies” superstar landed at #9, sandwiched between George Lucas and Dr. Phil. Mrs. Carter, whose hubby, Jay-Z, was named Hip-Hop’s Cash King by Forbes in August with a tally of $63 million, pulled down $87 million over the past 12 months.

The blond-haired trio of Britney Spears ($64 million), Lady Gaga ($62 million) and Madonna ($58 million) made their mark on the list at numbers 13, 14 and 15, respectively.

Pop tarts Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift capped the list. The young stars placed at 18 and 19 on the list, with Disney star Cyrus pocketing $48 million, and country singer Swift depositing $45 million into her bank account.

Hollywood’s 20 highest-earning men and women of 2010, according to Forbes:

1. Oprah Winfrey, $315 million
2. James Cameron, $210 million
3. Tyler Perry, $125 million

5. Tiger Woods, $105 million
