Oscar Night Ruled By ‘The King’s Speech’

‘Inception’ nabs four awards, one more than early awards-season fave ‘Social Network.’

“The King’s Speech” entered the biggest night in Hollywood as the clear front-runner to win top honors and did not stumble at the 83rd Academy Awards, nabbing four wins out of 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Colin Firth and Best Director for Tom Hooper.

“Inception” ended up roping in four wins as well, one better than “The Social Network,” which lost out in all the major categories after beginning awards season as a potential dominant Oscar presence yet losing momentum over the past month. The evening, in fact, unfolded without a single upset in the major categories, from Melissa Leo’s (“The Fighter”) early Supporting Actress win to the Best Picture triumph for “King’s Speech.”

Firth could have begun penning his Best Actor acceptance speech months ago. When he finally got the chance late in the night, he began, “I have a feeling my career has just peaked” and ended, again self-deprecatingly, “And now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some impulses I have to attend to backstage.”

Check out backstage photos of the big Oscar winners.

A very pregnant Natalie Portman (“Black Swan”) swept aside six-time nominee Annette Bening (“The Kids Are All Right”) for Best Actress. Entirely more serious than she was at the Golden Globes, when she laughed about getting to sleep with baby-daddy Benjamin Millepied, Portman instead ran through a dizzying list of thank-yous, acknowledging everyone from her parents to her publicists to director Darren Aronofsky, to whom she said, “You are fearless and a visionary.”

Up until the minute the directing award was handed out, no one could decide if Hooper or David Fincher (“The Social Network”) would end up the champ. In the end, Hooper soared on the strength of what he dubbed the “triangle of man love,” whose points apparently include Firth, Geoffrey Rush and the director himself.

The show kicked off with a high-concept, “Inception”-inspired cold open as hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway entered into the worlds of the Best Picture nominees and some beloved past films — from the boxing ring of “The Fighter” to the rehearsal studio of “Black Swan” to the time-traveling DeLorean from “Back to the Future.” The duo then sauntered out onto the stage at the Kodak Theatre and segued into a short, shared monologue in which Hathaway congratulated Franco on his Best Actor nomination and lamented that she wasn’t honored for her work in “Love & Other Drugs.” “It used to be, you get naked, you get nominated,” she joked. “Not anymore!”

Wearing a tuxedo and high heels, Hathaway popped up later for a musical number, riffing on “On My Own” from “Les Misérables” and accusing Hugh Jackman of bailing on a planned duet (following their song-and-dance number from the 2009 Oscars). Franco then joined her, in a blond wig and hot-pink ball gown, because, well, does Franco really need an excuse to be weird?

The first major award of the night went to Leo, who bested some stiff competition for Best Supporting Actress but might have been upstaged by the presenter bestowing her award. The 94-year-old Kirk Douglas commandeered the stage, haltingly telling jokes and clearly enjoying his moment in the spotlight, before announcing the winner. When she finally accepted the award, Leo struggled to keep her composure, unleashed a naughty word that the censors bleeped and profusely thanked the Academy for respecting her work.

Long the heavy favorite for Best Supporting Actor, Christian Bale surprised no one when he collected a win for “The Fighter.” More surprising, however, was how the often-reserved star fought off tears as he thanked his wife and daughter. Bale also shouted out the film’s cast and crew, saying of Leo, “Melissa, I’m not going to drop the F-bomb like she did. I’ve done that enough already!”

The writing awards went to two first-time nominees, with Aaron Sorkin nabbing Adapted Screenplay for “The Social Network” and David Seidler taking home Original Screenplay for “The King’s Speech.” Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross nabbed Original Score for “The Social Network,” and Original Song went to 20-time nominee Randy Newman for “We Belong Together” from “Toy Story 3,” which also won Animated Feature Film. Honorary Oscars went to Eli Wallach, Francis Ford Coppola, Kevin Brownlow and Jean-Luc Godard, who did not attend the ceremony.

In the evening’s funniest moment, Hathaway and Franco presented a series of faux-music numbers courtesy of the magic of Auto-Tune. Rupert Grint and Emma Watson unwittingly found themselves taking part in a song called “Tiny Ball of Light,” culled from “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1″ footage, and “Eclipse” star Robert Pattinson ended up crooning a little ditty alongside Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner titled “He Doesn’t Own a Shirt.”

Beyonce’s Mom Says Daughter’s Style Has Always Been ‘Edgy’

‘It’s just a result of her constantly evolving,’ Tina Knowles says of the fashion in Beyonce’s “I Am … World Tour” DVD concert special.

Beyoncé has never been shy about hitting the stage in stunning costumes. Her appearance has always been a mixture of showgirl sparkle and pop star razzle-dazzle. And her style is on full display in her new DVD concert special, “I Am … World Tour.”

Her mom and stylist, Tina Knowles, said that while the looks may seem a bit edgier than what fans have seen from the singer in the past, she thinks that her superstar daughter has always been ahead of the style curve.

“Well, the wonderful Thierry Mugler designed the costumes, and I actually worked on some of the dancers and the band, and it was just amazing to work with him because he is so creative,” Knowles told MTV News at a New York screening of the special. “So it’s just a result of her constantly evolving, but she’s been edgy. It’s funny for people to say she went more edgy, but she’s been wearing body suits and that type of thing.”

And while Knowles may act as her daughter’s stylist and costume designer, she says that Bey’s style decisions are all her own. “Well, we discussed her working with Thierry Mugler, and I’m the biggest fan. And so she had seen some of the fashions and she loved it,” she said. “So we always discuss things, but it’s her decision, it’s her career.”

Beyoncé, who also directed the concert special , said it gave her a better understanding of the filmmaking process. “It was hard work,” she said. “I learned so much. I have a new respect for directors and I think I would like to do more of it. … Well, I’ve done some co-directing for music videos [but] this was definitely a big step for me, and I’m so thrilled.”

Eminem Overtakes Lady Gaga As Facebook’s Most ‘Liked’ Living Artist

Feb 28 2011 Published by under Uncategorized

He could soon surpass the late Michael Jackson as the site’s overall most liked.

By his own admission, Eminem “doesn’t know how to work a computer,” but that hasn’t stopped him from overtaking Lady Gaga as the most “liked” living artist on Facebook.

Earlier this week, Em eclipsed Gaga to claim the title of Facebook’s most-liked, as he currently counts more than 28,975,000 fans to LG’s 28,926,000, according to Billboard. Eminem is currently averaging more than 500,000 Facebook “likes” a day, and could soon surpass none other than Michael Jackson to become the site’s overall most-liked artist, according to Famecount, a site that tallies the “top social network stars worldwide.” The late King of Pop currently has more than 29,183,000 Facebook fans, giving him a slight edge over the hard-charging Em.

Of course, when it comes to overall social influence, Eminem still trails both Gaga and Justin Bieber in total YouTube views — though he recently became the third artist to crack the 1-billion-view mark — and when it comes to total Twitter followers, his 3 million are barely enough to crack Famecount’s top 20 musicians: Gaga is #1, followed by the likes of Bieber, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Rihanna and, uh, Jessica Simpson.

Then again, all signs seem to point to Eminem’s social media profile only increasing. He shows up in Dr. Dre’s much-anticipated “I Need a Doctor” video, which premiered on Thursday, and just last week, he grabbed headlines when on-set photos from his upcoming “Space Bound” video — featuring porn star Sasha Grey — began making the rounds … and just in case you were wondering, Grey has more than 110,000 Twitter followers of her own.

Eminem And B.o.B Collaboration Leaks Online

The track, ‘Things Get Worse,’ features Em revisiting his Slim Shady persona.

Holy split personality!

An unreleased Eminem and Bobby Ray collaboration was unearthed online Thursday (February 24) that finds the two MCs tapping into their respective manic alter egos, Slim Shady and B.o.B

The mid-tempo track, “Things Get Worse,” harkens back to Em’s early days and his button-pushing rhymes.

“Note to Jessica Simpson, let’s go with the tuna casserole,” Eminem raps in one of the verses. “‘Cause I used to love her hooters, now Carmen Electra’s cuter/ Strap an extension cord to her arm and electrocute her/ I’m off my f—ing meds but I’m on an electric scooter/ I might just scoot by and shoot my mom in the neck with Rugers/ Spit in Jason’s face while I vomit on Freddy Krueger/ They can’t even get Jeffrey Dahmer to pet the cougar.”

“There’s no need to say sh– you already know, the question is just how far will this go,” B.o.B chants on the chorus. “‘Cause I will never lay down and I will never let up.”

“I guess things are gonna get much worse ‘fore they get better,” Em chimes in.

The song appeared on the blog of one of B.o.B’s managers, but there was no message indicating where the track will wind up or how long ago it was recorded.

After scoring three top 10 hits on the pop charts with his debut album, B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray, the rapper/singer said he wanted to return to his more lyrical roots before starting his next project.

In December, he released a mixtape, No Genre, that reminded his early supporters of his abilities, which he displays capably on “Things Get Worse.”

“I pass by people on the street, they seem like sleeping zombies,” he raps. “Stiffer than a therapeutic pair of jeans you running/ So can you hear me coming?/ Eminem, this beat is absolutely disgusting/ It’s probably got diseases on it.”

It’s not the first time the two stars have appeared on the same track, as Eminem also was featured on B.o.B’s Grammy-nominated “Airplanes, Part II” remix.

Have you heard Eminem and B.o.B’s “Things Get Worse” collaboration? If so, share your opinion in the comments.

Mary J. Blige Dishes On Her ‘Crazy’ Led Zeppelin Covers

‘I’ve listened to their music since I was a child,’ says the R&B diva, who recorded ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and ‘Whole Lotta Love.’

You wouldn’t peg Mary J Blige as the black-light-and-tapestry sort, but, as has become readily apparent in recent weeks, she absolutely loves Led Zeppelin.

In early February, reports began circulating that Blige had re-recorded Zeppelin’s classic “Stairway to Heaven,” working with Travis Barker, “American Idol” judge Randy Jackson and guitarist Steve Vai on the track, which is slated to appear on the international reissue of her Stronger With Each Tear album, due Monday.

But after she had recorded “Stairway,” Blige continued to get the Led out, covering another Zeppelin classic — the thunderous “Whole Lotta Love” — for the album too. And when MTV News caught up with her on the Essence Black Women in Hollywood red carpet, she told us all about channeling her inner Robert Plant for the tracks, a process that came much easier than you’d probably imagine.

“I did Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and ‘Whole Lotta Love’ — it’s crazy,” she said. “I am a Led Zeppelin fan. I’m not going to say I’ve been to their concerts, but I’ve listened to their music since I was a child, and it’s always moved me, especially ‘Stairway to Heaven,’ and ‘Whole Lotta Love’ is just fun.”

Blige also said she recorded another new song — a “club record” called “I Can’t Wait” — for the re-release. And while it’s only slated to hit shelves outside the U.S., she hopes her fans will get a chance to hear all the new songs pretty soon.

“I want y’all to hear it,” she laughed.
