Francis Lawrence confirmed to MTV News at the “Water for Elephants” premiere on Sunday that he had just wrapped up work on Beyoncé’s new video. And the director promised that this clip will live up to the expectations that have been building since photos from the set began leaking.

“I just shot a Beyoncé video at the beginning of this last week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, which was fun, and I hadn’t done a video since 2009,” he said, referring to the VMA-winning video for Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance.”

Lawrence went on to confirm a few more details about the song, without giving away too much of anything, per B’s orders. “The video’s for the songs ‘Girls’; it’s off her new album,” he said. “She would probably have me shot if I said anything. … Some stuff spilled out, but she wasn’t happy about it, so I’ve been sworn to secrecy.”

What spilled was some looks from the video, as well as details that there will be lots of dancing in the clip. “It’ll be big, it’ll probably be one of the bigger Beyoncé music videos ever done,” he added. “And, I can say that I think the song is unbelievable.”

The director noted that artists have definitely stepped up their video game in recent years and once again made visuals a vital part of their work. He gives some credit for that to Lady Gaga, as well as a number of Lawrence’s past collaborators, like Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and the Black Eyed Peas.

“The Gaga thing took me by surprise, ’cause I’ve done videos for probably 15 years, and I had forgotten what it felt like to have a video premiere and have it be anticipated and have it explode,” he explained. “And yeah I hope the same for Beyoncé, but I don’t know if that’s gonna happen. It is a fantastic song, so I really hope that song catches for her, and I think the video’s gonna be really fun and cool and different for her.”

J.J. Abrams Calls ‘Super 8′ Work With Steven Spielberg ‘Liberating’

Apr 29 2011 Published by under Uncategorized

‘I felt free to allow the influences of his films to rise to the surface,’ director tells MTV News.

If it were up to J.J. Abrams, he’d be able to keep his mouth shut about “Super 8″ — his upcoming, Steven Spielberg-produced summer blockbuster — until the movie slips into theaters June 10. That PR-free approach may have flown back when Abrams was making home movies to premiere, say, in his parents’ basement, but that’s just not how Hollywood works.

And so, as part of MTV News’ Summer Movie Preview week, Abrams skipped away from a scoring set, where he’s overseeing the orchestral music, to chat about the movie. We already know the film is set in Ohio in 1979 and follows six kids who are using a Super 8 camera to make a zombie flick. One night, they end up filming near a set of train tracks and capture a calamitous wreck and the creature that emerges from the wreckage. Soon the military pulls into town, and things start to get, well, very funky for these unsuspecting residents.

What we haven’t learned much about is the nature of Abrams’ collaboration with Spielberg, the way the director has managed to nod at Spielberg’s films without copying them and much more. Thankfully, Abrams stepped in to provide us with some answers.

MTV News: Are we tearing you away from finishing your film? I hope not.

J.J. Abrams: We’re about to lock picture, which I’m excited to do. I’m actually watching the musicians walk into the scoring stage right now with their cello cases and bass cases. It’s an amazing score that Michael Giacchino has written. This part of the process is always the most exciting, because everything’s coming together. The music is always one of the most exciting parts for me. I’m thrilled to be at this stage.

MTV News: Much of the discussion about this film has been about the blend of your talents and Spielberg’s. Is there a nod to [frequent Spielberg collaborator] John Williams’ scoring in this, or do you let Michael go at it without the specter of John Williams over him?

Abrams: I feel like on this movie, both he and I were as influenced by growing up and making movies as, let’s face it, those loser kids who weren’t the most popular, as we were influenced by the films of that era. What’s cool about working on this film, especially with Michael, is that he and I shared the same kind of memories of childhood, even though we grew up 3,000 miles apart. When we met, we bonded over how we had the same kind of references and making movies as kids. I don’t know how you would separate the various influences that Michael has experienced, including the remarkable scores of John Williams. What he’s doing is very much his own voice, which is the only thing I’d want. I’d never ask him to do a score that apes a pre-existing score. But certainly the mood, the DNA of this movie, is as influenced by the films of the era as it was by the personal experiences we both had.

MTV News: What’s cool about this is it seems like the kind of film we haven’t seen for a long time. There’s an earnestness and sweetness to it, in contrast to some of the cynicism we might see in summer movies. Would you agree?

Abrams: I haven’t thought about it in terms of earnestness, but avoiding schmaltz is a massively important tenet to uphold. The goal for this is not to be earnest, but to be emotional. Sometimes the emotion is laughter and comedy and joy. Sometimes it’s terror. Sometimes it’s heartbreak or love-struck or petrified. One of the problems with something that is considered earnest is that it’s somehow self-serious and lacking humor. That, to me, would be a disaster.

MTV News: How much have you used Mr. Spielberg as a resource throughout the process?

Abrams: He’s a real producer of this movie. He worked with me to develop the story. We had countless story meetings prior to and following the script. What was wonderful about working with him is the ongoing conversation. Because I was working with him, I felt free to allow the influences of his films to rise to the surface. If I hadn’t been collaborating with him, I would have been much more self-conscious. This is literally an Amblin movie. The ability to play with certain conventions of movies that he wrote, produced or directed was liberating. I didn’t feel like I couldn’t dare push in on a character’s face, but that would feel like a shot you’ve seen. If it was the 100 percent right moment for that, I felt like, “Screw it, this is what it is.” It began and was written and directed and is being finished not as an homage, but there are moments of homage in it. Steven will be here in 20 minutes at the scoring session. He came to the set a number of times. I showed him my first cut. I showed him last week what is minutes away from the final cut. He’s been an incredible collaborator.

MTV News: Do you have a favorite film from the Amblin era in the late ’70s and early ’80s?

Abrams: There are films that he made, even if they weren’t technically Amblin movies, that I loved. I loved “Poltergeist.” Obviously, I was a huge fan of the films he directed. “Back to the Future” I loved. “Goonies” was a blast. Any number of movies that he made. The common thread in all of those, which is my favorite thing about them, is that it’s relatable, ordinary people, sometimes in a classic suburbia, going through something terrifying or extraordinary or something sci-fi or supernatural. Even “Jaws” or “Close Encounters” had that.

MTV News: So in “Super 8,” how far along will it be until we see the creature?

Abrams: I would say the film will obviously answer that question.

MTV News: So this isn’t a “Star Trek” or a “Mission Impossible” — a pre-existing franchise. It’s frankly being marketed on your name. Is there a push and pull in terms of how much to show in these last weeks before release?

Abrams: I feel like the fun of the movie is the experience of these characters and the most fun you can have as an audience is not going in feeling like you’ve seen more of the film than the characters have. My gut would be, as it always is, is that less is more. We have no intention of spoiling the fun prior to the film being released.

It’s Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated films of the coming months. Get ready to gorge on inside looks at “Captain America,” “The Hangover Part II,” “X-Men: First Class,” “Cowboys & Aliens” and more.

Check out everything we’ve got on “Super 8.”

Stone Temple Pilots Reunited In Hopes Of Opening For Led Zeppelin, Bassist Says

Apr 29 2011 Published by under Uncategorized

‘If time allows, there will definitely be new music,’ Robert DeLeo adds of STP’s future.
By Chris Harris

There are a number of reasons why Stone Temple Pilots decided to reunite after nearly five years apart — some are obvious, and others, not so much.

Of course, the financial windfall of reviving the grunge stalwarts for an extensive U.S. tour was too good to pass up, and bassist Robert DeLeo readily admits as much. And then there are the fans, the ones who had been with STP since the very beginning as well as those who discovered the band only after it first split back in 2003 and who, woefully, have yet to catch the Pilots live.

On a more personal level, though, Stone Temple Pilots’ resurrection was purely selfish, and very much an anticipatory (not to mention optimistic) move on the band’s part: If, after the months and months of rumors and denials, there ever is a full-on Led Zeppelin reunion tour, STP wanted to be ready to offer their services as an opening act.

“Believe me, that was one of the reasons,” laughed DeLeo. “We thought, ‘We should get together now, in case Zeppelin does tour.’ I’m serious, man. That would be one hell of a bill: STP and Led Zeppelin. I mean, we could play a doghouse, out in the middle of the ocean, and if I got to play with Zeppelin, that would be a highlight of my life.”

Yes, DeLeo — and the rest of the band — had several reservations about raising STP from the dead — a feat DeLeo jokingly referred to as “Mission Impossible.” For the band’s members, the idea of regrouping was terrifying at first, but with time, the boys settled their differences and tried to think positive.

“For me, it was about putting down some of the things that I was used to getting bitten by,” explained the bassist — who, with guitar-playing brother Dean DeLeo, has been collaborating with Peter Frampton on material for his next LP. “After you get bitten, it’s hard to go back. I wanted to go into this with an open frame of mind and a positive attitude and just have fun with it. We should have fun with it, which God knows we didn’t always have with our career when we were younger. If that’s all I can say, and that’s what I can get out of this reunion, great.

“I think I speak for all of us when I say there’s a lot of unfinished business that we didn’t get around to the first go,” he continued. “Enough time has gone by, and it feels really good to be back. I don’t really want to put too much thought into how it feels — I’m just kind of going with it and keeping a good positive attitude about it. I just needed to get over the things that we all needed to get over, and that’s been working so far. If everyone shows up and does this thing, I think it’s going to be really amazing.”

DeLeo claims that during recent rehearsals, STP were “sounding as good as ever,” and he credits sobriety as part of the reason the band’s in tip-top shape.

“My brother’s going on four years of sobriety,” he said. “We have a lot more clarity in the band now, and I think with clarity comes appreciation. I saw that the other night, when we played [a secret gig in Los Angeles]. I saw it in my eyes, and in the eyes of the rest of the band. There’s a lot more rock in this band now.”

As for an STP record, DeLeo is not 100 percent sure that’s going to happen. The goal for STP over the next few weeks, he said, is to reacquaint themselves with their songbook and prepare for their return to the road. Once the band is back in that mindset, the bassist said new STP material is very possible.

“I’ve always got stuff written, and there’s always a long list of songs that are always there — it’s a matter of timing,” DeLeo said. “If time allows, there will definitely be new music. I think it would be silly not to release new music. I’d like to believe we still have a writing relationship, but the first step is getting reacquainted with what we know.”

While STP were on hiatus, frontman Scott Weiland teamed up with Velvet Revolver, and the DeLeo brothers joined forces with Filter’s Richard Patrick for Army of Anyone — who are now on hiatus after releasing a poorly received self-titled LP. Does DeLeo foresee an AOA reunion somewhere down the line?

“You never know,” he said. “It’s just like STP — I didn’t know if I was going to return. Whether we get back together and do anything, I think we made a great record, bottom line. That’s all that matters to me. If we make another one, I want to make sure it’s great, and that applies to STP and anything I do. But I was pretty heartbroken over [the feeble response to AOA's album].”

Casey Abrams Sent Packing On ‘American Idol’

Apr 29 2011 Published by under Uncategorized

Abrams lasted an extra five weeks after the judges saved him.
By Gil Kaufman

Ryan Seacrest warned off the top that fans were going to be disappointed with the news on Thursday night’s (April 28) “American Idol” results show. At the point in the season where you are guaranteed that half of the remaining six will end up in the bottom three, there were plenty of opportunities to be bummed.

But after finding new ways to make the amateur singers twist in the wind while awaiting their fate, when the smoke cleared, it was Casey Abrams whose card was punched into “Idol” purgatory. Lauded for his musical aptitude but hampered by a tendency to get overly aggressive and unnecessarily scatty during his performances, Abrams left the show after being saved by the judges earlier in the season.

There were plenty of things that had to happen before any actual results were read, though, like a trip to the British consulate in honor of Friday’s royal wedding, some Internet questions from fans and a medley of the Carole King-penned tunes “It Might as Well Rain Until September,” “One Fine Day,” “Go Away Little Girl” and “It’s Too Late.”

When it was time to finally give some results, Seacrest brought out each of the finalists in random order, with frequent bottom-three dweller Haley Reinhart dodging the bullet this week and being sent to safety after her bluesy rendition of “Beautiful.”

Seacrest teased audience fave Scotty McCreery, making him hang on after reviewing his sensitive-guy take on “You’ve Got a Friend.” He then called out fellow teen Lauren Alaina, who sang “Where You Lead (I Will Follow),” and … did the same thing.

The torture continued with bearded lover-man Abrams, who had grunted and scowled through a mother-lovin’ cover of the little-known “Hi-De-Ho” and was also sent back to the couch to chill through a commercial break. Surely, Seacrest would just wave James Durbin to safety after the rocker’s touching take on “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” And he did.

Though our experts were unanimous in picking gospel singer Jacob Lusk as the likely boot-ee after his up-and-down rendition of “Oh No Not My Baby — which mentor Jimmy Iovine said was also ankled by a poor, not star-like wardrobe choice — Lusk was spared yet again.

That left the unlikely due of Abrams and McCreery standing center stage facing the abyss. After wowing the judges and audience with his upright and electric bass playing, melodica honking and a controversial save, Abrams is now free to do what he vowed to at the end of his goodbye montage: “work hard and do everything I can to get myself out there and bring jazz back.”

His run ended with a reprise of his signature scowl-fest “I Put a Spell on You,” which included hugs and kisses with the judges, random smooches with audience members, a chest thump for McCreery, a barrel-roll onto the stage and a final eye-lock with purported show honey Reinhart.

The show also featured a drop-in from last season’s runner-up, Crystal Bowersox, who sang the bluesy old time rock and roll ditty “Ridin’ With the Radio,” as well as a song from Bruno Mars, who got mellow with his perfect summer tune “The Lazy Song.”

The top five will do it all again next week in the run-up to the show’s May 26 finale.

Justin Bieber To Co-Star With Mark Wahlberg In Street Ball Movie

Justin Bieber already has one of the top-grossing documentaries of all time with “Never Say Never.” And he’s gotten his feet wet doing a little acting on “CSI.” So it just stands to reason that his next move is to full-on star in a movie, right?

Enter superfan Mark Wahlberg, who knows a thing or two about making the transition from teenybopper pinup to movie-opening star. Wahlberg — who in August said, “the world needs Justin Bieber … Justin Bieber is like the white Tupac” — told New York magazine this week, “Justin Bieber and I are going to do a movie together.”

That’s right. Wahlberg said he’s in talks with Paramount on the project and hopes to set the film up at the studio following his Academy Award-winning flick “The Fighter.” But most importantly, Bieber is reportedly way into it and is excited to sign on for the project. “He loves the idea,” Wahlberg said. “He’s been sending me video, he sent me a video of himself, and, yeah, I think he’s really talented.”

Wahlberg described the movie as a drama in which he would play a “reluctant mentor in an inner-city environment,” but cautioned that neither he nor Bieber will sing or dance in the film. In fact, last August Wahlberg said he wouldn’t break his nearly two-decade-long hip-hop silence … unless Bieber asked him to.

Deadline Hollywood reported that the untitled drama is an exploration of street basketball in which Bieber will get a chance to show off his dramatic chops. Wahlberg and partner Stephen Levinson will produce alongside Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun. The script is being written by Ian Edelman, creator of HBO’s “How to Make It in America.”

“The tone of the project is described as ‘The Color of Money’ meets ‘The Karate Kid,’ and it came out of Wahlberg and Levinson seeing Bieber play ball in February during a celebrity game held during NBA All-Star Game weekend,” Deadline reported.

Bieber has clearly been bitten by the acting bug. In September he raved about his guest appearance on “CSI” as Jason McCann. “I liked it because you never knew what was going to happen. Now that I’m on it, it’s pretty cool,” he said of the show. “It opens a different audience to the show,” he explained of his appearances, “and it also helps me because a new audience that might not know me is now going to see me. So it works both ways.”

Royce Da 5’9′ Says Recording With Eminem ‘Pushed’ Him

Apr 29 2011 Published by under Uncategorized

‘You can only spit on a certain level in order to even keep up,’ Royce tells MTV News about Bad Meets Evil EP.
By Rob Markman

When it comes to SoundScan, it’s no secret that Eminem is a juggernaut. His 2010 album, Recovery, is fast approaching 4 million copies sold and earlier this week, his sophomore album, The Marshall Mathers LP, was certified diamond.

But according to Royce da 5’9,” when he and Slim Shady began recording their upcoming Bad Meets Evil EP, the only thing on their minds was creating raw hip-hop.

“Me and Em, when we started hangin’ again — he don’t go anywhere — so we were hangin’ at the studio,” Royce recalls. “And we just started making records, just making ‘em because we were both in the lab and we had free time.”

The casual recording led to some serious heat, Royce said. So much heat, in fact, that Shady Records decided to release an EP rather than let the songs fall by the wayside.

Nickel Nine and Em first teamed up to form Bad Meets Evil more than a decade ago, releasing the songs “Nothin’ to Do,” “Scary Movies” and “I’m King” on Game Recordings in 1999. The pair had a falling out, but eventually reconciled. In January, it was announced that Eminem had signed Royce’s rap quartet, Slaughterhouse, to his Shady Records label. And earlier this week, the duo revealed plans to release an a-yet-untitled Bad Meets Evil EP in June.

The reunion forced the already well-regarded Royce to step his game up lyrically.

“To me, [Eminem is] one of the greatest rappers ever. So if you’re standing in there with him and watching him create, you can only spit on a certain level in order to even keep up,” Royce said. “With me, I feel like it’s good for me because I get pushed. It brings more out of me.”

In the end, the veteran lyricist insisted that, with Bad Meets Evil, there’s no pressure to make hits. “We went in and did actually 11 records, two of ‘em leaked, so we’re gonna use the other nine and that was it,” he explained. “We didn’t go do 15 records and try to pick the best. We didn’t make it an Eminem album so Eminem is under the same pressure of selling what he normally sells. We’re not really thinking about that.

“We just wanted to do a raw hip-hop record that’s put out on a bigger stage,” Royce added. “I think that’s what hip-hop is missing.”

What are you expecting from the Bad Meets Evil EP? Let us know in the comments!
