With the comedy sequel premiering on Thursday (May 26), we prepare you for what to expect when the ‘Hangover’ boys head to Bangkok.

” ‘The Hangover’ was lightning in a bottle,” director Todd Phillips told us back in September of his $467 million-grossing comedy. “You can’t judge other successes or other movies based on it.”
Well, what if you just so happen to catch that lightning again? And what if, it turns out, you managed to bottle a whole lot more this time? Then can we do some comparing and contrasting with the original? Perhaps even Phillips wouldn’t object at this point, with some industry insiders suggesting that “The Hangover Part II” could reel in more than $120 million domestically over the five-day Memorial Day holiday weekend. No R-rated film in history has opened to more than $100 million in box-office receipts.
So how did Phillips & Co. reach this ultra-lucrative point? To understand that, we have to flash all the way back to before the June 2009 release of the original “Hangover,” when the film was testing so well in early screenings that Warner Bros. started making plans for a sequel. Just after the flick opened to $45 million, another “Hangover” was officially a go. Where the filmmakers went from there is something you’ll find out below in another MTV News cheat sheet: everything you need to know about “The Hangover Part II.”
Sobering Up “We were thinking of sequel ideas when we were shooting, which sounds cocky, but we were doing it more because it was just fun to talk about ideas while hanging out on the set,” Phillips told us in June 2009. “Two weeks ago I was saying, ‘Let’s see how it works out.’ Now that the movie has really connected, it’s something we’re doing for sure.”
The question was, would all four stars — Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms and Justin Bartha — return for a new adventure? And how would Phillips spin another “Hangover” story after a ridiculous, couldn’t-possibly-happen-twice tale set in Las Vegas? By December of that year, Phillips seemed to have his answer — he just wasn’t going to let the secret get out. “It doesn’t take place in Vegas, but it’s certainly the same characters,” he revealed.
Then Phillips and his team kept their heads down and worked on a script — one which, we found out nearly a year later, would take the Wolf Pack to Thailand for the wedding of Helms’ character, Stu. True to Galifianakis’ word, shooting kicked off in the fall of 2010.
Glug, Glug, Glug Our first peek at the “Hangover Part II” production came in October 2010, with a shot of the boys in an airport (Ontario doubling for LAX) on their way to Southeast Asia. That same month, news broke that Mel Gibson had signed on for a brief cameo as a tattoo artist. But after cast protests reportedly cropped up, the controversial actor was dropped from the film and Liam Neeson was hired to take over the role. (Neeson, in turn, was eventually replaced by Nick Cassavetes). “We just had a long talk about it, I explained it,” Phillips told us of his conversation with Gibson to let him know about the recasting. “He certainly understood, you know. He wasn’t happy, but he certainly wasn’t upset. I mean, it just was kind of a bummer because I think he understood the intention of the casting and the role.”
Production wrapped up on January 1 of this year, and a teaser trailer dropped the next month. “It’s truly a teaser, so it might end up frustrating more than solving questions,” Phillips told us shortly before the promo arrived. He wasn’t kidding: We could tell that the pals were in Thailand, that things were not turning out very well for them and that Helms somehow got stamped with a Mike Tyson-style facial tattoo. But other than that, plot info was hard to come by. A full “Hangover Part II” trailer appeared in April, giving us more information about the storyline. The shenanigans get started after Stu’s rehearsal dinner, when one beachside drink leads to the guys waking up in a shady hotel. Stu’s soon-to-be brother-in-law is missing; Ken Jeong’s hilarious gangster, Mr. Chow, is hanging out; and everyone has to get back to the resort before the wedding ceremony is set to begin. Helms told us. “Oh, and also hilarious. I forgot that … Lots of craziness happened on set, and you’ll see all of that in the movie.”
Cooper declared that he believes the second film is funnier than the first, which made any initial nervousness secondary to his enthusiasm. “I think it was more excitement once we got the second script, which was really wonderful — actually stronger than the first one,” Cooper said. “It was just utter excitement to play these characters again and hopefully deliver a movie where fans will be excited to see what happened. We get to see where [Galifianakis'] Alan lives, we get to see Stu progress to two years, [my] Phil as well, so I think it was just exciting to hopefully provide a lot more comedy for people who liked the first one.”
That’s exactly what Phillips is hoping too. “I think there are very few sequels that have been made that live up to or exceed their first film. ‘The Godfather’ is the first one,” he told us. “We had always planned on calling it ‘The Hangover 2,’ and when we finished the script, I changed the cover page and wrote ‘The Hangover Part II,’ because I think the film lives up to or exceeds the first one. It was very much a nod to ‘The Godfather.’ ”

Paparazzi are warned: Young Hollywood is on the defense. Just a week after Justin Bieber flipped off the paps (and later apologized), Miley Cyrus is also taking a stand against the prying camera lenses of the celeb-obsessed.
As a video posted online shows, the incident took place when a paparazzo ran up from behind Cyrus and her mom, Tish, as they were getting into their car after hitting up California Chicken Cafe in West Hollywood on Wednesday. Cyrus didn’t seem to like how close the camera guy got to her mother, so she pushed his lens out of the way, confronting him for getting too invasive.
“You just hit my mom with your camera,” she told the man, pointing her finger at him. “Don’t you ever do that again. You just almost hurt my mom. Don’t you ever even think about it, for real.”
As the two women got into the car, the paparazzo still tried to get his photo, as he said, “I would never disrespect your mom like that.”
Cyrus has been vocal in the past about her frustrations with photographers following her around, noting that they are an intrusive by-product of her life in the public eye.
“I just [want] people to know, I think in pictures I always look upset. It’s because these cameras are following me. I just think it’s really kind of unfair,” the teen star shared in a September 2010 video blog. “I know there are some people that maybe like that attention, but I’m not one of them. I really just want to be able to go on walks and enjoy where I live … The paparazzi really frustrate me, and it makes me really upset that I’m being followed around by men that I don’t know, and for anyone else, it would be considered stalking. I don’t know who those guys are. I don’t know if they’re good guys or bad guys. I don’t necessarily care; I don’t want anyone following me.”

Detail talks to MTV News about brand-new Tha Carter IV ballad that finds the Young Money captain crooning.
By Rob Markman
Be it rap, rock or pop, Lil Wayne is on a mission to stretch the boundaries of his music. Just ask Detail, the producer behind Weezy’s new Tha Carter IV single “How to Love.”
“Wayne is a rock star and he’s up for any challenge in the world as long as it feels right,” he told MTV News. “He don’t ever really discriminate on talent and people; if it feels right, he’s up for the challenge.”
There was certainly no shying away from breaking new ground on “How to Love.” The track features an acoustic guitar lick and a subdued drum pattern. Over it, Wayne sings about topics far sweeter than what his fans may be accustomed to hearing from him. Detail, who went to visit Wayne in Miami after the Young Money CEO was released from his eight-month prison bid, says that the song was recorded in MIA during a session last November.
“We created it in a very organic way; he’s a very organic person,” said Detail, who also writes songs and performs. “Me and my production team created a couple of tunes that we could deliver to him. I was shocked on his response on that song. Once he responded to it, it wasn’t nothing to it but to do it.”
The Detroit producer actually used Lil Wayne and Birdman’s 2006 single “Leather So Soft” as inspiration for “How to Love.” “The crazy part about it was I know Wayne plays guitar. If y’all ever seen the I Am Music Tour, he be playing the guitar. So we created something that was like ‘Leather So Soft,’ where he could rock out with the guitar.
“We’re visual with that type of stuff, so we just created a simple guitar riff that he can play on tour as well, over some 808s, a smooth ballad type of a beat,” he explained. “It wasn’t nothing special, it was just something that felt strong. That was the type of record that would rock in his iPod and rock in my iPod for days and days and days before the world got a chance to experience the pleasure of something with such organic-ness.”

Beyoncé’s “1+1″

Beyoncé may not know a thing about algebra, but when it comes to the math of power ballads, she totally gets it. On Wednesday night, Beyoncé premiered her new track “1+1″ during her performance on “American Idol.”
After changing into a gown following her medley performance with former “Idol” contestants, B was up on the stage surrounded by soft red mood lighting and smoke, slowing things down a bit and proclaiming her love for that special someone in song. The lyrics make sweeping statements about the power of her relationship.
She sings, “Hey! I don’t know much about guns but I … I’ve been shot by you/ Hey! And I don’t know when I’m gonna die, but I hope that I’m gonna die by you/ Hey! And I don’t know much about fighting, but I, I know I will fight for you/ Hey! Just when I ball up my fist, I realize that I’m laying right next to you.”
The song is the second officially released single from her album 4, which hits stores on June 28. On Wednesday, Beyoncé revealed the full track listing for 4.
“1+1″ opens the album and is one of 12 songs. The remaining 11 are: “I Care,” “I Miss You,” “Best Thing I Never Had,” “Party” (featuring Andre 3000), “Rather Die Young,” “Start Over,” “Love on Top,” “Countdown,” the recently leaked “End of Time,” “I Was Here” and the album’s lead-off single, “Run the World (Girls).”

Justin Bieber tied with Eminem as the top winner at Sunday night’s Billboard Music Awards with six trophies. But it was his embrace of reported sweetie Selena Gomez that set the Internet on fire after a night that saw splashy performances from Rihanna, an upside-down Cee Lo Green, Nicki Minaj, Ke$ha, Mary J. Blige with Lil Wayne, Taio Cruz, the Black Eyed Peas and Pitbull.
Bieber’s awards included trophies for Top New Artist, Top Social Artist, Top Streaming Artist, Top Digital Media Artist, Top Pop Album and Top Streaming Song at his first-ever trip to the show. Meanwhile, veteran Eminem (who was not in Las Vegas for the show) nabbed Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album, Top Rap Artist, Top Rap Song and Top Rap Album for his smash comeback, Recovery.
Six artists were just behind with three wins each, including Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Usher, Mumford & Sons and Cruz. Though Bieber and Gomez have kept their relationship under wraps for months, the “Baby” singer kissed and hugged Gomez before taking the stage to accept an award.
The show featured a number of performances, two of which included surprise appearances from a lip-synching Britney Spears. The pop diva literally popped up out of the floor to join Rihanna for “S&M,” writhing on a stripper pole while brandishing a pair of diamond handcuffs. The two finished things off with a pillow fight and a kiss. She also topped off a performance of Minaj’s “Super Bass” with a bit of her own “Till the World Ends.”
Weezy teamed up with Blige for the remix of “Someone to Love Me (Naked).” Green wore a sparkly outer-space outfit while playing piano and singing a medley of his hits (“Crazy,” “Bright Lights Bigger City” and “Forget You”); he levitated over the stage and pounded the keys of his silver piano while hanging upside down at one point.
But perhaps the biggest moment of the night was when Beyoncé was presented with the prestigious Billboard Millennium Award, which was preceded by a video honoring her with testimonials from First Lady Michelle Obama, Bono, Lady Gaga, Bey’s parents and sister Solange, Stevie Wonder, The-Dream and Barbra Streisand.
She accepted the award after an eye-popping performance of her new single, “Run the World (Girls),” which was highlighted by a breathtaking digital background featuring a shifting array of effects that produced a legion of virtual backup dancers and CGI-like movie effects.
Out of breath from her performance, Beyoncé thanked her mother and father for teaching her about hard work, as well as former Destiny’s Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, past DC members and, in a break with their usual low-key nature, husband Jay-Z.
“I’d also like to thank my best friend, and I don’t want to put you on the spot because I know they’re probably putting a camera in your face right now, but I love me some Jay-Z,” she said with a smile.
A number of artists also took home two awards apiece, including Katy Perry, Shakira and Train.
