There wasn’t much question about whether Beyoncé’s fourth solo effort, 4, would debut at the top of the Billboard 200 chart this week — it was just a matter of what the final tally would be.
Beyoncé does indeed top the chart with sales of 310,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. But that’s about 172,000 less than the first-week tally for her last effort, 2006′s double-disc smash, I Am … Sasha Fierce, and marks the softest opening sales for the singer’s solo albums to date (edging out her 2003 solo debut, Dangerously in Love, which moved 317,000).
Bey leads a parade of new faces in the top 10, including the debut from Kanye West protégé Big Sean, Finally Famous: The Album, which lands at #3 (87,000). Also new to the top 10: the latest from Selena Gomez & the Scene, When the Sun Goes Down (#4, 78,000); the second effort from former “American Idol” winner David Cook, This Loud Morning (#7, 46,000); and the debut EP from this year’s “Idol” winner, Scotty McCreery, which hits #10 on sales of 40,000.
As for the rest of the top 10, Adele‘s 21 continues to defy expectations and recent music-industry logic by scooting up one spot to #2 on sales of 92,000 as her year-to-date figures pass the 2.5 million mark. After debuting at #1 last week, Jill Scott falls to #5 with The Light of the Sun, which was down 60 percent on sales of 55,000. Country singer Jason Aldean‘s My Kinda Party moves up four spots to #6 (48,000), “America’s Got Talent” mini-opera diva Jackie Evancho falls four to #8 with Dream With Me (44,000) and the Eminem and Royce da 5’9″ collabo, Hell: The Sequel, slips three spots to #9 (42,000).
While sensitive folkie Bon Iver takes a major 63 percent tumble to #11 (39,000) with his self-titled second album after a #2 debut last week, it is the steady decline of Lady Gaga‘s Born This Way that continues to make headlines. Even as U.K. breakout star Adele has managed to hover around the top five for most of the year and rack up the biggest figures to date for a 2011 release on the back of just one single (“Rolling in the Deep”), despite a string of singles and high-profile videos, Gaga’s album has steadily faded after just six weeks.
This week marks its first outside the top 10, as Born This Way falls another four spots to #12, with sales dipping another 22 percent to 38,000 as total sales passed the 1.5 million mark.
Elsewhere on the charts, the all-star Buddy Holly tribute album, Rave on Buddy Holly, comes in at #15 (28,000), just ahead of the comeback attempt from 1990s nu-metal icons Limp Bizkit, Gold Cobra (#16, 27,000), and the self-titled album from a reunited Taking Back Sunday (#17, 27,000).
Country star Blake Shelton clearly benefited from his turn on the NBC hit reality singing program “The Voice,” as his Loaded: The Best of Blake Shelton rises 42 spots to #18 as sales ballooned by 182 percent to 25,000. Meanwhile, Maroon 5‘s latest, Hands All Over, also saw a bump thanks to singer Adam Levine’s gig on “Voice,” jumping 47 spots to #26 as sales went up 139 percent to 18,000. Judge Christina Aguilera saw a more modest uptick, with her 2008 greatest-hits album, Keeps Gettin’ Better, re-entering the charts at #46 on sales of 12,000.
Fans also welcomed back beloved dusty folk singer Gillian Welch, whose first album in eight years, The Harrow & the Harvest, hits #20 (23,000).
Also charting: rapper Curren$y with Weekend at Burnie’s (#22, 23,000), “Idol” season 10 runner-up Lauren Alaina with her debut EP (#24, 20,000) and third-place finisher Haley Reinhart with hers (#37, 14,000).
Over on the iTunes charts, Beyoncé rules the albums list, followed by Sean, Adele, Gomez, Shelton’s greatest hits, Bon Iver, the resurgent Maroon 5, Cook, Eminem and Royce and Mumford & Sons‘ Sigh No More. In an indication of why her sales might be less than impressive, Bey doesn’t have a single song on the iTunes singles chart, which is led by LMFAO‘s “Party Rock,” which beats out Katy Perry‘s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” Pitbull‘s “Give Me Everything,” Nicki Minaj‘s “Super Bass” and “Voice” winner Javier Colon‘s “Stitch by Stitch.”
Adele holds on to the #6 slot with “Rolling in the Deep,” with “Voice” runner-up Dia Frampton just behind with “Inventing Shadows.” She is followed by Hot Chelle Rae‘s “Tonight Tonight,” Lil Wayne‘s “How to Love” and Lady Gaga’s “The Edge of Glory.”
With no major releases hitting stores this week, look for Beyoncé and Adele to duke it out for the top slot in the next cycle.

It’s not just those nine VMA nods — it’s been a record-setting year for Katy.

There’s no other way to say it: Katy Perry is having a moment. Actually, she’s having 525,600 moments, as in 365 days of record-smashing, parent-upsetting, whipped cream-spurting, alien-loving, Indian wedding-having minutes of awesomeness.
And what better way to top it off than with a field-leading nine MTV Video Music Award nominations? Perry leads this year’s field, as well she should, given that her clips for such hits as “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework” and “E.T.” have become modern classics and racked up millions of online views.
But the year has been about a whole lot more than gummy video goodness, so we decided to take a look back and crunch some numbers on the Year in Katy:

4 million: Number of digital copies Perry’s “E.T.” has sold so far. In fact, it joins her hits “California Gurls,” “Firework,” “Hot N Cold” and “I Kissed a Girl” in reaching that mark.
48: That’s the record Perry shattered for the most consecutive weeks with a single inside the top 10, beating out Swedish popsters Ace of Base.
2: Number of beefs Perry got into with Lady Gaga and Britney Spears. Though it was quickly squashed, for a minute it seemed as if the former Christian singer had dissed Gaga’s “Alejandro” video for its use of religious imagery.
Months later, Perry denied taking a swipe at Spears over product placement in Britney’s “Hold it Against Me” video.
4: Perry came this close to making history this summer when it looked like “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” would become the fifth single from Teenage Dream to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. If she had hit the top (she stalled, ironically at #4), she would have become the first female artist to ever have five #1 songs off the same album and the first artist of either gender to do it since Michael Jackson (in the period between 1987 and 1988).
2: Number of times Perry has appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine since Teenage Dream came out.
17: Shots of Perry’s nearly naked rear end in the “California Gurls” video. (Not like we sat there and counted or anything.)
Billions: Amount of Gummi Bears that Perry offended when she cast some nude, crude and middle-finger-flipping rude candy bears in the “Gurls” video.
9: record-setting number of weeks Eminem’s Recovery would have spent at #1 had Teenage Dream not rained on its parade.
0: Total number of celebrities besides Perry who have had their “Sesame Street” bits shelved because they showed too much cleavage.
2: Number of elephants (Laxmi and Mala) involved in Perry and Russell Brand‘s wedding in India in October. Also involved in the wedding? Jugglers, acrobats, a drum troupe and traditional Indian Rajasthani folk singers and dancers.
0: Number of famous couples besides Perry and Brand who have flirted and gone on a date and then gotten married after being introduced at the VMAs.
The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. See the list of nominees, revisit last year’s highlights and vote for your favorites in the general categories by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Em plays two versions of himself in eerie clip co-starring former porn star Sasha Grey.

Eminem on the set of his “Space Bound” music video
Photo: Eric Ford / On Location News
Just when we thought Eminem had fully escaped his demons following the release of his multiplatinum 2010 album Recovery, Marshall Mathers takes his own life with a single gunshot to the head in his new “Space Bound” video, which is now available on iTunes.
The video is a gut-wrenching look into another of Eminem’s tumultuous relationships, much like the one exhibited in the video for “Love the Way You Lie” — this time with deadly results.
Filmed in Los Angeles in February, the Joseph Kahn-directed clip starts with our leading man walking down a foggy road in the middle of the night. Obviously perturbed, a sullen Em marches on, hands in his pockets, until a passing car picks him up. In the driver’s seat is the Detroit rapper’s love interest, played by former porn star Sasha Grey. Things clearly aren’t all peaches and cream.
Eminem jumps in the front passenger seat, with a pensive look on his face, while another, more cynical version of Em rides in the back. The differences between the two Shadys are apparent. The front-seat version is calm, with his eyes darting back and forth between his girlfriend and the gun that sits in the glove compartment. The other Em is riled up, hurling insults at Grey, though she is unaware of his presence.
As the couple pulls up to a pit stop, Grey exits the vehicle first with a gun in her back pocket, while Em follows her. They enter a diner, Grey first and the rapper a few steps behind. Here, the director splits the screen and the two Eminems go their separate ways, one to the counter and the other to the booth where his girlfriend sits, texting on her cell phone.
Eminem grows suspicious of the texts and checks his girl’s phone after she gets up to go to the bathroom. The rapper apparently finds what he has long suspected: His woman is cheating.
Throughout the video, Eminem follows Grey like a lost puppy. It’s when they check into a motel room that the drama unfolds. Closing the door behind him, Eminem begins to attack his girlfriend before realizing that she wasn’t even there in the first place. Left at the end of his rope, Eminem pulls out the gun, puts it to his chin and fires a single shot through his own head. Blood splatters, and Shady falls to the floor.
Simultaneously, the alternate Eminem, who is still seated at the counter, is struck by the bullet as well, falling back off of his bar stool before the clip rewinds back to the beginning of the 4:30 video, where we once again see our leading man walking down that foggy road in the middle of the night.
Did Eminem imagine the entire ordeal? Or did his cheating girlfriend metaphorically kill the hopeless romantic, leaving only a distrustful version of himself? The image is jarring; the interpretation, however, is up to you.
How did you interpret Eminem’s “Space Bound” video? Tell us in the comments.

Co-star Daniel Craig had to ‘look me up and down,’ actress explains.

Olivia Wilde in “Cowboys & Aliens”

Olivia Wilde might have been covered in dust and dirt while shooting “Cowboys & Aliens,” but that didn’t make shooting a mostly nude scene in front of her co-star Daniel Craig any less awkward.
“It was kind of strange because I was half-naked in front of a bunch of people, including the crew, a bunch of Apache warriors, a bunch of cowboys, and Daniel Craig, who I had to stand in front of basically naked,” Wilde explained to MTV News. “He had to take a moment to sort of look me up and down before covering me in a blanket. And I was like, this is crazy.”
It didn’t help that after the long night of shooting, Wilde and the rest of the “Cowboys & Aliens” cast had to take an overnight flight to San Diego Comic-Con to make their Hall H presentation. So if fans remember her being a little frazzled, it probably has something to do with the fact Wilde had no sleep after filming a scene in which she was partially nude for the majority of it.
As fans will find out come Friday’s release of “Cowboys & Aliens,” the scene Wilde is talking about — which has been teased in the film’s many trailers — happens at the climax. She said filming the sequence was an “honor” because it is such an important moment in the movie.
“It was really exciting because we knew we were creating something kind of spectacular in that scene,” Wilde said. “It was a really cool effect happening, as people will see.”
The actress said she didn’t wear much make-up and required little hairstyling while filming because the style of the flick was “very bare.” She said it was a very dirty shoot, and not just because she was almost naked.
“We were literally dirty because we were riding all day long out in the desert, and you get very dirty. But the dirtier everybody looked, the hotter they looked. It was a really good look, I think,” she said.
“The people in the Old West were very dirty. The thing that’s unrealistic about our movie is all our teeth: We have good teeth; they didn’t have good teeth. So, logic police will call BS on that.”

Miley Cyrus is ready to take her music back on the road. The teen superstar is in the planning process for a full-scale international tour, E! News confirms.
Miley will kick off the tour on April 29 at Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa in Quito, Ecuador. Then she will take the show to Lima, Peru, at Explanada del Monumental, on May 1. The singer/actress, who has already begun a workout regime to prep for the tour, is set to announce more dates soon. There are no immediate plans for her to play shows in the United States.
“Miley has a huge fanbase worldwide,” a source told E! News. “She’s pumped that her schedule has opened up and allowed her to perform for fans abroad.”
For those who might not be able to see her on tour, Cyrus has resumed tweeting. No, the star has not reinstated her account, like Demi Lovato, but instead will send messages from the Twitter account of production team Rock Mafia. Cyrus is attached to a big-screen adaptation of the group’s music video for their track “The Big Bang,” which she starred in with Kevin Zegers.
“This is my new way to connect. When I need to speak out I will tweet from @Rock_Mafia ROCK MAFIA FOREVER. x MC,” she tweeted, including a picture of herself and the group’s Antonina Armato, who added, “Writing with Miley on a Rainy Sunday #Heaven!”
Cyrus has been meeting with lots of music producers recently. Last week she met with “Party in the U.S.A.” producer Dr. Luke. Sources tell MTV News that Miley is interested in writing more for other artists.

Uncle of orphaned, injured Texas children calls outreach ‘amazing.’

On July 3, the Berry family suffered an incredible tragedy. Parents Joshua and Robin Berry were killed in a car crash, while brothers Peter, 9, and Aaron, 8, were paralyzed, possibly for life, and remain hospitalized. Their younger sister, Willa, 6, was also injured, but suffered only broken bones. In the weeks since the crash in Texas, celebrities have been doing their part to help raise money for the care of the three young children.
Using the power of social media, everyone from Justin Bieber and Britney Spears to Lady Gaga and Usher have asked their fans to “Show Your Hearts” with donations at showyourhearts.org and via text message (texting BERRY to 85944 donates $10). Their call to arms has meant the world to Matt Berry, the kids’ uncle.
“My wife had this family member in the Justin Bieber camp, and when the accident happened … they reached out to us and asked how they could help,” he told MTV News on Thursday. “So, it’s been pretty much organic from their reaching out. Right after the accident, he was asking for their names and praying with his mom for the kids. It’s not something we expected would happen, obviously.
“So, my understanding is that he wanted to do something to help, and the best way they could help was to create awareness,” he continued. “They have a lot of friends and contacts. And then, of course, once their campaigns started going, it looked like a lot of people joined it because I think everyone had some sort of feeling of empathy.”
The family is still mending: Peter and Aaron’s “lifelong conditions” have been amplified by the loss of their parents; meanwhile Willa is still trying to come to terms with the incident.
Matt Berry said of all the public support they’ve received has “definitely helped.” “Anything that goes to help the kids in their predicament [helps]. I don’t know how long it will continue. I’m not someone who likes to be in the public eye, so it’s a little bit awkward, but it’s amazing.
“It’s a little bit overwhelming,” he added, but he said that right now, the family is taking it “day by day” as they deal with the aftermath of such a tremendously tragic turn of events.
“If it was up to us, we’d pray that they were able to stand up in a couple of weeks and walk out of the hospital, but the likelihood of that happening is low,” he said, adding that the boys are readying for rehab to try to heal in any small way. “There’s been a lot of people supporting us, and that’s huge. The ultimate dream is if in their lifetime, there’s enough momentum to figure something out and fix spinal-cord injuries. We’ve got two of them that need something special.”
