Justin Bieber’s VMA-Nominated ‘U Smile’: Frame By Frame

Aug 30 2011 Published by under Uncategorized

‘We took a more mature approach in the video, focusing on him as an artist,’ director Colin Tilley says of clip, which is up for Best Male Video.

In the Colin Tilley-directed “U Smile” video, Justin Bieber meets some girls on the street and becomes smitten with one of them. He then takes her to hang out with him at a big concert hall, where he makes her swoon by playing the piano for her.

The sugary-sweet clip is up for Best Male Video at the 2011 Video Music Awards, and Tilley, who also worked with Bieber on “Never Let You Go,” spoke to MTV News about the behind-the-scenes of making the video just days before the VMAs go live Sunday.

The video opens with Bieber meeting some fans outside a theater, and the Flip cam footage they used for audio ended up making the final cut. “During this scene, we were only outside for 15 minutes, but literally paparazzi were everywhere,” Tilley recalled. “It was pretty difficult, but I’m happy with the finished product. This whole intro scene was actually done very fast, because we didn’t have much time before the sun set, so we really just had to go full-throttle.”

While paparazzi and nature proved to be obstacles, a third was making sure that Tilley cast the perfect leading lady. “The girl’s gotta be really great … she was really nice and she did a great job,” he said. “Justin and her clicked really well.”

The video is actually pretty simple, with the focus of it being on “our classic piano in this beautiful theater, lots of great lighting. This is pretty much focused on Justin’s performance.

“This song, in general, when I first heard it, I kind of got the feel that it was a more mature feel for Justin,” Tilley continued. “So we took a more mature approach in the video, focusing on him as an artist and as a kid growing up. … For me, this was kind of the place he goes every night to practice, so he was willing to take this girl he saw on the street and take her into his world.”

For Tilley, the standout shots are of Bieber hanging out in an alleyway, calling to mind the images in Michael Jackson videos. “This is probably my favorite setup in the video,” he said. “In this alleyway, it had a whole Michael Jackson feel. It was pretty iconic for Justin at the time.”

As it turns out, the video was shot right after the 2010 VMAs, when Bieber took home his first-ever Moonman. “The night before, he had won an award and he just came to set with a great attitude; he was super positive,” Tilley said. “I hadn’t worked with Justin for probably a year. He’s so much fun to work with. He’s got a really cool attitude on set.”

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year’s highlights and vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Beyoncé, who instructed girls to run the world with her VMA-nominated smash song, will now run the stage at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.

The “Run the World (Girls)” singer, who has three nominations this year (including Best Female Video, Best Choreography and Best Cinematography) and is the previous recipient of nine Moonmen, including 2009′s Video of the Year award for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” will join the lineup of 2011 VMA performers, which already includes Lady Gaga, Adele, Bruno Mars, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Young the Giant, Pitbull and Ne-Yo. Jessie J will serve as a house artist for the ceremony.

“We are thrilled to have Beyoncé return to her rightful musical home at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards,” said Amy Doyle, executive producer of the 2011 MTV VMAs and MTV’s EVP of Music & Talent, in a statement. “Her performances at the VMAs are legendary — leaving everyone breathless and talking for days. We can’t wait to see her set the stage on fire once again!”

While it’s been two years since the pop diva extraordinaire last hit the stage as a VMA performer (when she, along with a bevy of backup dancers, brought down the house with a “Single Ladies” number), Beyoncé recently played a series of intimate shows at New York’s Roseland Ballroom, performing songs off of her latest album, 4, as well as classic hits, including favorites from the Destiny’s Child era, to sold-out crowds.

The VMAs will air live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday at 9 p.m. (live ET/ tape-delayed PT). Presenters includes Selena Gomez (who will pull double duty as VMA pre-show host), Taylor Lautner, Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj, Zoe Saldana, Seth Rogen, Drake, Joe Jonas, Jared Leto, Jonah Hill, Will Ferrell, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Victoria Justice, Rick Ross, Odd Future and JB Smoove.

Though voting is closed for Beyoncé’s categories, fans can still vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com online or m.mtv.com on their mobile phones. In addition, Best New Artist text voting is open to all wireless carrier subscribers by texting BNA to 66333. Voting continues all the way through the show, until the winner is announced live on Sunday.

‘Ghost Rider 2′ Trailer: An Expert Analysis

Aug 30 2011 Published by under Uncategorized

‘Spirit of Vengeance’ sneak peek has MTV Movies team excited for what’s to come from the Nicolas Cage superhero.
By Eric Ditzian and Josh Wigler

The “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” trailer popped up online late last week, and what else is there to say about it other than Nicolas Cage closes out the new footage by pissing fire? Well, it turns out there’s a heck of a lot left to say, which is why the MTV Movies team jumped into the comic book action for an expert commentary.

The trailer begins sweetly, with a score reminiscent of “Lost” and some epic title cards: “He fought the curse … evil will force him … to face his demon.” But any wacky notion that directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, who also helmed the “Crank” films, have delivered a kinder, gentler Johnny Blaze is quickly dismissed when the music picks up and the flames flicker to reveal our first look at the new Ghost Rider.

It’s a look the directors have spoken with us about at length. “We wanted this black skull, with this gasoline fire and this black, inky smoke to get this real feeling of explosions and fire and heat,” Neveldine said at San Diego Comic-Con. “That’s something we really went for: ‘Let’s feel the heat in this movie.’ ”

The grittiness of this Ghost Rider most definitely shines through in the trailer. Charcoal skull? Check. A whiff of gasoline seemingly rising off the screen? Check. Neveldine and Taylor not holding back in this trailer and delivering a full-on look at our hero right off the bat? Check. And they don’t stop there, quickly showing off Ghost Rider’s signature move, the Penance Stare: He looks into your eyes and makes you feel all the pain and suffering you’ve ever inflicted on other people. This is no fairy-tale power. This is not X-ray vision. This is a hard-core demonic power, one which was not played very well in the first film. Even in this quick shot, the Stare looks very cool.

Speaking of demonic powers, the trailer got us thinking this film might not just be a sequel to the 2007 original, but to Cage’s “Drive Angry,” the 3-D action flick that had the actor busting out of hell to inflict gory revenge on his enemies. Crazy talk? Sure. But since “Drive Angry” hardly performed well enough at the box office to justify a sequel, we’ll take whatever we can get.

We get to see plenty of Ghost Rider here, but the trailer gives us the briefest glimpse of Johnny Whitworth as Blackout. He’s part human, part demon, all bad news. Whitworth is a guy to watch — hardly a household name but one who delivered an energetic supporting role in the largely forgettable “Limitless.” With Neveldine and Taylor in control, there is serious potential for killer fight scenes between Blackout and Ghost Rider.

Another character we get a peek at is young Danny Ketch. Comic fans will know him as one of the guys who eventually becomes Ghost Rider. The big departure here is that Danny is a kid. In the comics, he’s a young man. While this film probably won’t turn into a passing of the torch from Cage’s Johnny Blaze to Danny as the next Ghost Rider, it’s nonetheless cool to see filmmakers laying the mythological groundwork.

The trailer ends with pure, absurd fun: Ghost Rider declaring that it feels awesome when he pees fire. That’s essentially how Cage feels about the movie as a whole. “The Ghost Rider is just the coolest-looking superhero, and it has to be the one that goes to film and looks the best,” the actor told us at SDCC. “I think they’ve achieved that with this.”

Check out everything we’ve got on “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.”

2011 VMAs Pull Largest Audience In MTV History

Aug 30 2011 Published by under Uncategorized

Sunday’s VMA Pre-Show also ranked as the best on record.
By Kara Warner

Thanks to unforgettable performances, a baby announcement and a lady superstar in full drag, among other major highlights, the 2011 MTV VMAs grabbed the biggest audience in the network’s history.

In addition to bringing in a record-breaking 12.4 million total viewers, Sunday night’s VMAs now rank as the #1 cable telecast of the year among viewers ages 12 to 34, and the #1 non-sports cable telecast of 2011 with total viewers.

“Anything can happen during the VMAs,” Video of the Year winner Katy Perry told MTV news. “It’s definitely just the funnest awards show of the whole gamut, of all the award shows. The VMAs are like a f—ing monkey out of hell award show,” she laughed. “You just want to watch a spectacle, you want to watch what goes down and I think so many different sparks fly creatively.”

On Sunday evening, amid a slew of eye-popping performances, Beyoncé took the stage to perform “Love on Top.” But this was no ordinary performance, even for the Queen B: At the end of the song, she revealed her pregnancy by pulling back her sequined jacket as husband Jay-Z cheered from the audience. And the surprises kept coming, from Lady Gaga as male alter ego Jo Calderone presenting Britney Spears with MTV’s Vanguard award to Adele’s powerful rendition of “Someone Like You.” Of course, as hip-hip goes, the unbilled appearance by Kanye West and papa-to-be Jay became one of many dominant VMA night Twitter trends.

The VMA Pre-Show was equally impressive and ranked as the best on record, while MTV Digital saw its highest VMA day ever on Sunday with VMA content attracting 2 million unique visitors, an increase of 33 percent year over year. Additionally, MTV racked up more than 10 million page views on Sunday, up 18 percent year over year. VMA video content generated 2.3 million streams for the day, up a whopping 41 percent vs. the day of the 2010 VMAs. It was also the most social VMA day of all time, with social networks driving 76 percent more traffic than a year ago.

A special encore presentation of the telecast airs Monday night (August 29) at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT, followed by the premieres of all-new series “Ridiculousness” at 10 p.m., “Death Valley” at 10:30 p.m. and “Cuff’d” at 11 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
