If you’re not yet familiar with Josh Hutcherson, you’re about to be.

The talented 18-year-old has been a working actor for half his life, quietly paying his dues with roles on television and in films, earning Hollywood street cred in films like “Kicking and Screaming,” “Bridge to Terabithia” and “Journey to the Center of the Earth.”

Then last year, Hutcherson suddenly evolved from dependable sweet-faced child actor to formidable future leading man with his buzzed-about performance in the award-season darling “The Kids Are All Right.” That career momentum kicked into future-superstar gear when Hutcherson landed the highly coveted role of Peeta Mellark in the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling “Hunger Games.”

All things considered, it’s a no-brainer that Hutcherson made our New Class list as the “Actor Most Likely to Play a Superhero.” MTV News caught up with him recently to talk about the honor, his very busy year and, of course, “The Hunger Games.”

MTV News: You’ve experienced the whole award and recognition thing before, but how does it feel to be named to our New Class?

Josh Hutcherson: It’s very nice, especially to be considered with the group I’m in here with, all peers of mine I admire very much. I’ve been an actor for a long time, so to finally get some recognition from some people that I think are really cool is pretty nice.

MTV: It seems like this past year has been a whirlwind. Take us through all the projects you’re juggling at the moment.

Hutcherson: It’s been crazy. I shot “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” the end of last year and the beginning of this year, then I went into a little short film I shot in Cuba with Benicio Del Toro ["7 Dias en La Habana"], which was really fun, and then this summer the whole time I spent shooting “The Hunger Games,” which was an amazing experience. Very exciting, and I can’t wait for that to come out.

MTV: Is there someone in the business whose career you’d like to emulate?

Hutcherson: I have a few people. I’ve always been a big Jake Gyllenhaal fan. I like how he goes from doing a bigger studio movie to a more independent film. I am a huge Christian Bale fan; I think he’s incredible and can play any role and kill it. And I’m also a die-hard Ryan Gosling fan, so those are my guys I’d like to be like.

MTV: Do you make a conscious effort to go from smaller, independent films as well as big studio films?

Hutcherson: Yeah. It’s all about balance; everything in life is about balance, in my opinion. You have to do the big studio movies to keep people caring about you in a way, and also for me, I’ve been really fortunate. I haven’t done any big studio movies that suck. They’ve all been good material and that’s the most important thing for my career, to choose the right material and to choose the characters that I care about and stories I want to tell, so that’s kind of how I’ve gone about my career since I was 9, more or less.

MTV: So let’s talk briefly about “The Hunger Games” and that crazy audition process.

Hutcherson: For the audition process, I came in the first time and read a few scenes for [director] Gary Ross and [author] Suzanne Collins and some of the other producers involved. Then maybe about a week or so, maybe two weeks later, I came in and did a screen test with [co-star] Jennifer [Lawrence], where I actually read the scenes with her so they could see how the chemistry worked. Both of them felt really great, but as an actor, you just pick apart every single thing that you do, so for me, I was on pins and needles waiting to find out. And then when I finally found out, my jaw hit the floor. I was so excited.

Kristin Cavallari knows she has her work cut out for her on “Dancing With the Stars,” but it sounds like she’s up for the challenge.

On Monday’s show, Cavallari vamped it up in her Hollywood-glam interpretation of the quickstep. Dressed in a sexy, long and flowy white gown — reminiscent of siren Marilyn Monroe — the reality star made a tremendous improvement from her first week’s performance, the judges enthused.

In her rehearsal for this week’s dance, MTV News caught up with Cavallari and her partner, Mark Ballas, who sized up their competition. They both said everyone brought their own talents to the table and they are on the lookout for them all.

“No one’s bad!” Cavallari said. “That’s the thing. I think it’s going to be a tough season.”

Last week, the 24-year-old former “Hills” and “Laguna Beach” star wowed the judges when she shook her way through the cha-cha. This week, she earned 22 out of 30 points — the second-highest score behind Ricki Lake — in addition to some pretty meaty praise from the trio of judges.

“I’ve been bedazzled by the blond bombshell! I love old, Hollywood glamour! This performance was twinkling with pleasure,” Bruno Tonioli gushed. Carrie Ann Inaba added: “Last week, nervous; this week, stunning! You kept your hold, you kept your frame. I thought it was gorgeous!”

Who do you think is Kristin’s toughest competition on “Dancing With the Stars”? Let us know in the comments!

Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Nirvana Among O Music Award Nominees

Katy Perry, Odd Future, Demi Lovato will also face off on October 31 in categories like Oops! I Did It Online and Fan Army FTW.

The list of nominees runs from Justin Bieber to Courtney Love, Britney Spears, Scissor Sisters, Katy Perry, Bjork, Nirvana, Dolly Parton and Snoop Dogg, and that can only mean one thing: It must be time for the O Music Awards again.

When MTV launched its first-annual digital music celebration earlier this year, we promised that it would be like no other awards show, with trophies handed out before, after and during the show, as well as throughout the year.

Sticking to that plan, the O Awards will return for a second round on October 31, with some of the new categories coming courtesy of user suggestions.

Among the five new user-generated categories are “Oops! I Did It Online,” in which over-sharing celebs such as Sinead O’Connor and T-Pain will face off against the Game and Courtney Love; and Best Artist with a Cameraphone, which pits Demi Lovato against Bieber, Young the Giant, Katy Perry, the Deftones and Shiny Toy Guns. The other new categories include Best Web Born Artist (MNDR, Odd Future, the Weeknd), Best Vintage Viral Video (Metallica, Nirvana, Notorious B.I.G., O’Connor) and Best Lyrics Video (Perry, Joe Jonas, Lenny Kravitz, Christina Perri).

Among Gaga’s two nominations are Fan Army FTW — in which she’ll square off with the followers of Bieber, Taylor Swift, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Lovato, ICP, Adam Lambert and Tokio Hotel — and Must Follow Artist on Twitter, in which she faces Cher, Snoop Dogg, Blink-182′s Mark Hoppus and Blake Shelton.

The O Music Awards will also honor a number of artists who are really good at this whole online thing, with Bjork, Chris Milk, Girl Talk and the Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne vying for the Digital Genius Award.

The other categories include: Best Fan Cover, Hottest Music NILF (think about it), WTF I Love This Award (online craziness), the self-explanatory Too Much Ass for TV award, Most Outrageous Tweet and Best Music Forum. There are also awards coming for Most Innovative Festival, Best Music App, Best Music Hack, Beyond the Blog and Most Addictive Social Music Service, which includes such faves as Spotify, Turntable.fm and Rdio.

The first edition of the awards featured performances by Mumford & Sons, Foster the People, Lupe Fiasco, Matt & Kim and a world record freestyle by Chiddy Bang’s Chidera “Chiddy” Anamege

The O Music Award’s first-time winners included Gaga (Most Innovative Artist and Must Follow Artist on Twitter), Kanye West (Best Tweet), Tokio Hotel’s Aliens (Fan Army FTW), Thirty Seconds to Mars (NSFW Music Video), Aquarium Drunkard (Best Independent Music Blog) and MJJ Fan Community (Best Fan Forum).

The O Music Awards 2 will unfold on Halloween on OMUsicAwards.com, as well as MTV.com, VH1.com, CMT.com, LogoTV.com and MTVHive.com. Fans can vote for their favorites at OMUsicAwards.com.

Do Foo Fighters Know Robert Pattinson From Robert Plant?

During band’s rehearsal break for Sunday’s Movie Awards, we put Foos to the test.

UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Hard rock, heavy metal, hardcore and punk have long gone hand-in-hand with evil wizards, magic, vampires and werewolves. And with a collective sub-cultural pedigree that includes stints in the Germs, No Use for a Name, Sunny Day Real Estate, Scream and some band called Nirvana, you’d think the Foo Fighters — set to perform at Sunday’s Movie Awards — would know their “Potter” from their Zeppelin. Certainly they can recognize a “wand” reference and pinpoint its origin?

Right? Before we put MTV News’ magically crafted trivia to the band, it seemed safe to assume the Foos would accurately distinguish between the words of Harry Potter, a “Twilight” character and Led Zeppelin. But was their underground nerd cred blown to shreds? Read on — and click the video! — to see how the Foo Fighters fared when we caught up with them on the Universal Studios lot, shortly after they finished rehearsing their Movie Awards performance.

Our own Jim Cantiello played dungeon master as Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Taylor Hawkins, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear were given a series of semi-famous lines and asked whether they originated with “Harry Potter,” the “Twilight Saga” or the lyrics of hard-rock pioneers Led Zeppelin.

Here’s a sampling of a few of those one-liners:

» “The elder wand, the most powerful wand ever made.”

» “Why don’t you let me be yours ever truly? Can I make your garden grow?”

» “You’re lying, Dolores! You mustn’t tell lies!”

Can you guess whether the lines above came from the “Potter” flicks, “Twilight” or Robert Plant?

Watch as the Foos try their best to do exactly that. Then tune in to the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday to catch the Foo Fighters rock the stage with their new single, “Walk.”

Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards? Find out June 5, when the 20th annual show airs live at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Tune in at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT that night for the “America’s Best Dance Crew” finale and Movie Awards pre-show, loaded with live action from the red carpet, exclusive movie clips and a special edition of “After Hours.”
